Mita comes from a family of musicians. Mita got initiated by her father, Sri Indubhushan Gupta, a disciple of Sri Usharanjan Mukhopadhyaya. Mita's music lessons continued under the magical guidance of her uncle Sri Baroda Gupta, Smt. Maya Sen and Pundit Lakshmishankar.  

After Graduating from Calcutta University in Philosophy, Mita pursued her quest for music and graduated in Rabindrasangeet with Honors in 1985 from Rabindra Bharati University (founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore), Kolkata. Mita continued her unstoppable quest for learning and received the prestigious " Sangeet Prabhakar" and "Sangeet Bibhakar" degrees from Allahabad Prayag Sangeet Sammelan, a renowned Music school in Allahabad, India.

Manna Dey, the living legend of Indian music, blessed Mita for her "awe-inspiring" presentation of Rabindra sangeet in "Robir Aloy Mita"

Mita is the most celebrated Rabindra sangeet singer of North America. She is the only international artist who performed on several occasion at Rabindrasadan and Shovabazar Palace (Rajbari) for the annual Rabindrajayanti celebration .   Mita has the rare distinction of performing at the Dakshineswar Kali Temple  during the Kali Puja festival during 2002, 2007 and 2008.

Mita has performed at more than 100 programs all over U.S.A, Canada, and parts of Europe and India. She has been featured on most Kolkata TV channels (Doordarshan Channel DD7, Tara Bangla TV, ETV Bangla, MonTV), All India Radio (FM 107MHz), Radio Snap, Atlanta Radio Network WRFG (FM 89.3) and Portland Radio Networks (KBOO-FM 90.7 and KKEY-AM1150).

Mita has been invited on many occasions by renowned Hindi film actor/director and producer Mr. Sunil Dutt to perform (in U.S.A) for the Nargis Dutt Cancer Foundation Fund Raising Events. Mita was the first Indian singer to initiate the fund raising movement for ailing Miss Sulaghna Mukhopadhaya, fighting Scaloderma, in 2002. Many more such events followed to help Miss Mukhopadhaya.

Mita is the Director of SargamUSA, a music school in Portland, Oregon helping the Indo American people learn Rabindrasangeet and light Indian classical music.
